Defending Islam Against Stereo Types

Raising Doubts about Islam - Sharia (Islamic Law) is Harsh because;

  1. It Cuts the hand of the thief.

  2. Stone to death married men or women who cheat on their spouse.

  3. Gives 100 lashes to men or women who commit fornication and have not been married before.

  4. Cuts the neck of the murder

  5. Gives 80 lashes to the ones who drink alcohol beverages.

  6. Gives death sentence to those who abandon Islam.

  7. Allows slavery.

Answers:

  1. It is less harsh that the National Defense Authorization Act and Guantanamo bay.

  2. Why are you concerned about how harsh it is. Do you have criminal plans? Only criminals should worry the most. (This is argument is good only for the corrupt person who is arguing about Sharia laws. You can use this argument with decent people as humor to raise a point that decent people shouldn't worry too much about how harsh is Sharia laws).

  3. Purpose of Sharia is to protect the public space. Those who violate moral laws of Sharia in their own private space and they are not caught, it is between them and Allah. Moral police can't spy on people private spaces as shown in the story of Omer RA and the drink people. The Prophet SAW said to his companions in the Hadeeth narrated in the book of Imam Malik (Al-Mwata) that the one who violates a law set by Allah, he/she should hide it and take advantage of the name of Allah الستار (the Coverer of Shame). If he/she shows his violations to us, then we will apply the punishment set in the Sharia laws on him/her.

Defending Islam Against Stereo Types

Islam is Terrorism and Muslims are Terrorists:

1.       About Bin Laden sharing the religion with us:

a.       Same as Hitler sharing the religion of our fellow Christians

2.       Bin Laden hijacked the name of Islam and he doesn’t represent Muslims:

a.       Same as Timothy McVeigh representing the home grown terrorism

b.      Same as Christian fundamentalists who blew up the abortion clinics. See the anti-abortion violence

c.       Same as the catholic Irish Republican Army and Jerry Adams

3.       Bin Laden proves that Muslims are violent

a.       Bin Laden actually proves that Muslims are peaceful because he represents the exception not the norm. According to this report from the president of US, the number of Al-Qaeda members left in Afghanistan is 100. If we assume that Al-Qaeda has 100,000 members left, then the ratio between normal Muslims and Al-Qaeda Muslims is 100,000 to 1,500,000,000, which is 0.007%, which means that 99.993% of Muslims are main stream, which means that Muslims are doing really well.

b.      The exception proves the rule to be true not false because if there is no exception, there will be no rule. In other words, the existence of exception proves the existence of the rule, which is that main stream Muslims are not violent in this case.

4.       Many Americans are killed by Muslims:

a.       The number of Muslims killed by Americans far exceeds the number of American killed by Muslims.

b.      Both sides are wrong, the state sponsored terrorism and the gang sponsored terrorism.

c.       The British used to refer to the American freedom fighters as terrorists.

d.      One man terrorist is another man freedom fighter.

5.       Almost all acts of terrorism are done by Muslims

                        a.       False, see terrorism in United States.

The debate didn’t go well. Only two students were very active and making arguments and the remaining students had no interest. Parents should make sure that their children are not ashamed of their religion or misunderstand their religion. Al-Qeda is a political movement that gave Islam a bad name just like Zionism gave Judaism a bad name. Many Jews are saying that Zionism doesn’t represent us like Muslims saying Al-Qaeda doesn’t represent us.

Defending Islam Against Stereo Types

Islam Says "Kill the Infidels":

"And Kill them where ever you find them" Quran 2:191

This is cut and paste. Look at the Ayah before, the entire Ayah, and the Ayah after.

The Ayah before (2:190) says: Commands Muslims to fight only the ones who fight them and not to transgress beyond that.

The entire Ayah (2:191) says: Kill them where ever you find them (referring to the ones who fight you) and drive them out of the place they drove you out from before (so they kicked you out of your land, and you should kick them out and take back you land). Then the Ayah states a fact, which is confusing people away from the path of God is worse than death. Then the Ayah instructs the Muslims not to fight them (referring to the ones who fight you) at the Haram Masjid in Mecca unless they start first for this is the fair punishment to the wrong doers.

The Ayah after (2:192) says: If they quit, then Allah is Most forgiving and Most Merciful.

Quran (5:5) permits Muslim men to marry Christian and Jewish women.

Status of Non Muslims who live in Muslim land according to Shariah

The criterion of being an enemy or a friend doesn't depend on religion. It depends on justice.

Wrong coalition. In Islam you don't make teams based on religions

If B is a pretending Muslim but corrupt, then you (A) teamed up with a corrupt pretending Muslim (B) against an honest non Muslim (C). This makes you foolish. B has fooled you by pretending Islam to trick you into fighting honesty.

The right way is to be against corruption regardless of the religion of the corrupt people. When understanding Quran, keep in mind that there were no corrupt Muslims at that time. The Muslims were the Prophet and his companions. Thus, category B didn't exist. This is why the Quran always addresses Muslims as the honest righteous ones.

The following arrangement is true if the Prophet is fighting alone.

Example of Category C at the time of the Prophet was Al-Najashi (Negus). In the following arrangement the Prophet is teaming with allies.

Defending Islam Against Stereo Types

Women are oppressed because they can’t be leaders:

1.     Islam doesn’t violate the rights of Muslim women. Islam recognizes that the job of women in general is more honorable than the job of men. While the product of a woman is a human being, the product of a man is commercial products. Motherhood is not an inferior job, rather it is a much more honorable job.

2.     Western media stereo type Islam as a religion that oppresses women and doesn’t allow them to be leaders. This is not true. Benazir Bhutto is the former prime minister of Pakistan and Sheikh Hasina is the current prime minister of Bangladesh. The prime minster is the head of the government in both countries. The most civilized nation in the world today is United States of America. There was never a female president elected in the history of United States until now. The US media doesn’t propagate these facts but rather they stress the stereo types. We should learn facts about one another rather than stereo types.

Hijab is oppression:

1.     This is what Muslim women believe is the expectation of God from them. They are free to believe and practice their beliefs. After Taliban left power in Afghanistan, Muslim women continue to wear Niqab, which is the most strict version of Hijab.

2.     God expects Muslim women to cover their feminine features for it is not for public display. This way they guarantee that they are appreciated for their talent and not for being sexy or not (having chemistry or not). By having scarves, it is guaranteed that any male will be interested in them only for descent business. It is very unlikely that a male who is interested into indecent business will approach a woman with scarf. In addition, Islam prohibits the use of the feminine features (chemistry) in business and forbids females from using their feminine features to propagate unethical temptations.

3.     Consider the following statements coming from the mouth of a reporter who won an award when their male coworkers got jealous of her and said that she won the award because she has chemistry. She got mad and said “Being sexy has nothing to do with winning the award. I won the award because of my talent, not because of my chemistry”.

3.     If you go to the Vatican, women are not allowed to meet the Catholic Pope without head covers and decent cloth.

4.     Mary the mother of Jesus and church nuns believe in Hijab and they are dressed accordingly.

5.     Beautiful girls who are almost naked are used to advertise cars and bulldozers. The implied message is ….?

Let us answer the following Question Is Hijab Required in Islam?

Ayah 24:31 States that Allah wants a "Khimar" that is long enough to cover the top chest area. Khimar is a perfectly understandable Arabic language word that means a head cover. The Ayah also mentions the list of relatives, men and children that women don't have to wear Hijab in their presences

Ayah 24:60 States that old ladies beyond the age of marriage don't have to wear Hijab provided that they don't decorate themselves. The Ayah also says that it is better if they keep their Hijab.

Ayah 33:59 States that Allah wants a "Jilbab" that is long enough to cover the legs. Jilbab is a perfectly understandable Arabic language word that means a wide dress that doesn't reveal the body contours and don't show what is under. In other words, not transparent or tight.

  1. The hug between angel Gibril and the Prophet SAW signifies the start of communications between heavens and earth. It is a hug between a heavenly being (angel Gibril) and an earthly being (Prophet Mohamed).
  2. The pain in the hug signifies the law of nature "No Pain No Gain". Examine how much pain did the Prophet SAW go through to reform the earth and bring the heavenly values down to be implemented in the land of reality.
  3. The place in which this communication started is a bare cave. A cave that has no furniture or basic necessity. It signifies that non fancy places are more dear to Allah than fancy places because fancy places are more tempting and distracting from the dedication to Allah. Many people wasted their lives trying to have fancy places or make a more fancy place instead of focusing their efforts around worshiping Allah and making the earth a better place by participating into reformation efforts.
  4. The word Iqra signifies the very important concept in Islam that we should read and understand life using the names of Allah. Any understanding or interpretation of life that opposes the names of Allah is a false understanding.
